Did you know that every year, 1.6 billion tonnes of goods are transported in and around Britain?

Despite the effects of both Brexit and the pandemic, the UK logistics industry is only growing. As a result, a plan has been put in place to ensure that the freight industry continues on this upwards trajectory and can carry on supporting the British economy.

At last week’s Multimodal Exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham, the UK Government unveiled their long-term plan entitled “The Future of Freight”.

What does the plan entail?

The new scheme lays out a basic plan of action which will allow the Government to collaborate with the logistics industry in order to reach a shared goal, to create a bigger logistics and freight sector that is “cost-efficient, reliable, resilient, environmentally sustainable and valued by society.”

How will the plan be implemented?

Also included in the plan are various ways in which the government and logistics industry’s shared goal can be implemented over the next 12 months or so; including promoting modal shift and regularly reviewing barriers to delivering a zero carbon freight infrastructure.

Within this same time frame, there will be several Freight Council meetings, during which these new goals will be implemented and their progress assessed - these include the Summer 2022, Autumn 2022, Winter 2022/23 and Spring 2023 Meetings.

So, what is “The Future of Freight”?

The government’s new plan provides us with a roadmap for the future of the freight industry in the UK.

As is outlined in the plan:

"Government and industry leveraging their strengths and power can have a huge impact delivering the future of freight the country needs to underpin levelling up, economic growth and a truly global Britain for generations to come."
