What is a part load?

In this article, we will explain the benefits of (and the differences between) part loads, full loads and groupage.

A part load (sometimes known as a partial load or a less than container load/LCL) is a shipment that uses just a limited amount of the total available space on a container or vehicle.

One part load container can contain goods from up to 3-4 different businesses.

For companies moving smaller shipments, a part load can be the perfect way of saving money by transporting their goods without needing to hire the entire container or vehicle.

What is the difference between a part load and a full load?

Where a part load is a consignment that takes up part of the total storage space available on a vehicle or container, a full load or FCL (full container load) is a shipment that fills all of the available space.

Loads that are large, hazardous or refrigerated will typically require a full truckload. However, this can be significantly more expensive than a partial load.

What is the difference between a part load and Groupage transport?

Groupage transport involves consolidating multiple shipments from different customers into one single container or vehicle. Each business involved will typically just have 1 or 2 pallets onboard. In groupage transport, a single container will contain goods from many different businesses.

While groupage transport requires the goods to be dropped off to one central location (and then each business' 1-2 pallets to be transported on smaller trucks to their final destination), part loads require all goods in the consignment to be delivered by one vehicle.

This means that part loads can be much more convenient, especially for time-sensitive shipments. Partial loads are also useful for businesses who don’t have enough goods for a full load, but have more than 1-2 pallets (as is typical in groupage transport).

How do I choose the right haulier or courier?

Different drivers will have different levels of expertise, while different vehicles will be suited for different shipments. For time-sensitive, hazardous, refrigerated shipments - or any with specific requirements - sourcing a driver and vehicle can be time-consuming and costly.
